Pakistani Furniture Shines at Dongguan Fair in China highlighted traditional craftsmanship of the country.
From March 15 to 19, the 53rd International Famous Furniture Fair (Dongguan), a leading global exhibition for the home furnishing industry, is hosting over 1,200 prestigious brands from around the world. Among the participants, Nuer Pakistan, a Pakistani furniture company, is making its first appearance, showcasing traditional craftsmanship that has captivated a large audience.
Their display includes exquisitely designed rosewood tables and chairs with copper inlays, along with fruit baskets and decorative copper pieces shaped like deer, horses, and swans. The collection also features copper vases and onyx vessels. Shahbaz, a representative of Nuer Pakistan, described the exhibition as a cultural link, introducing Chinese buyers and designers to Pakistan’s rich furniture-making heritage.
Overwhelmed by the positive reception, Shahbaz expressed optimism about potential business opportunities, stating, “The foot traffic at the expo has been amazing. We are very hopeful as we have engaged in promising discussions regarding orders.” The fair, spanning over 1 million square meters, serves as a hub for global design, home furnishings, materials, and artistic innovations. It provides Pakistani entrepreneurs not only a learning platform but also a chance to form collaborations and business partnerships.
Despite its strong tradition and craftsmanship, Pakistan’s furniture industry struggles with modernization and scalability. Industry reports estimate its market value at approximately $1 billion, with exports representing only a small portion. In contrast, China remains the global leader in furniture production and exports, reaching $67.884 billion in 2024.
Shahbaz emphasized the growth potential through collaboration with China. He noted that while Pakistan lacks advanced technology and machinery, it benefits from affordable labor and an abundance of wood resources. Learning modern techniques and upgrading production standards could significantly enhance the industry’s competitiveness.
Additionally, he highlighted the potential for Chinese investment in Pakistan. “We invite Chinese machinery manufacturers to invest in Pakistan, train us in the use of advanced equipment, and improve our production processes. Such collaboration could transform Pakistan’s furniture sector,” he concluded.
