Diplomatic tensions between Pakistan and India have deepened as reports emerge of persistent harassment of Pakistani diplomats stationed in New Delhi.
According to official sources, four Pakistani High Commission officials living in private rental properties have been served eviction notices before their contracts expire. The diplomats are reportedly under constant surveillance, with essential services such as gas, water, and internet being deliberately disrupted. The delivery of Indian newspapers to the mission has also been halted for over six weeks.
Sources further disclosed that visa extensions for 17 Pakistani staff members, requested three to five months ago, remain pending with India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
The latest developments follow a series of hostile measures by India after the Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, which triggered a dangerous military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed nations. Islamabad has categorically denied any involvement in the attack.
In recent months, India has declared Pakistani diplomats persona non grata, suspended the 65-year-old Indus Waters Treaty, cancelled visas for Pakistani citizens, shut down the Wagah-Attari border crossing, and ordered a reduction in diplomatic staff.
Military hostilities escalated with Indian missile strikes on cities in Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, killing dozens of civilians. Pakistan retaliated by shooting down Indian warplanes and launching “Operation Bunyanum Marsoos,” targeting key Indian military installations.
A brief ceasefire was eventually brokered on May 10 following overnight diplomatic efforts led by the United States, confirmed separately by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and India’s foreign secretary.
The Pakistani High Commission has formally lodged its concerns with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Islamabad, terming the harassment a blatant violation of international diplomatic norms.
