Pakistan Railways (PR) has announced a Rs100 billion rehabilitation project to upgrade 19 branch lines nationwide. The initiative aims to enhance passenger safety, improve service reliability, and boost inter-provincial rail connectivity while easing pressure on the country’s road network.
According to official details, Rs98.58 billion will be spent to modernize 2,479 kilometers of railway tracks across Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan.
Punjab will receive the largest share Rs44.41 billion for the restoration of eight lines, including Shahdara–Narowal, Raiwind–Kasur–Pakpattan, and Sargodha,Lalamusa. Sindh will see six routes upgraded at a cost of Rs35.96 billion, covering key sections such as Hyderabad–Mirpur Khas–Marvi and Rohri–Jacobabad.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Rs17.22 billion will fund the rehabilitation of four routes including Peshawar, Jamrud and Mardan–Charsadda, while Balochistan will receive Rs1 billion for a 33-km track section.
A senior PR official said the plan focuses on safety, modernization, and passenger comfort through track rehabilitation, upgraded signal systems, and modern coaches. The project also includes digital ticketing and real-time tracking for improved transparency and convenience.
Officials believe the revamped network will enhance economic activity, lower logistics costs, and promote sustainable national growth by making rail transport the preferred choice once again
