Pakistan and Qatar have agreed to expand their bilateral cooperation to include joint efforts in tackling plastic pollution, promoting environmental sustainability, and advancing green investments. The understanding was reached during a high-level meeting in Islamabad on Friday between Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadik Malik and Qatar’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Ali Mubarak Ali Essa Al-Khater.
The meeting comes ahead of critical global climate negotiations in Geneva next week, where countries will discuss a legally binding treaty aimed at curbing plastic pollution. Dr. Malik emphasised that such agreements must address the “access, affordability, and sustainability” challenges faced by developing nations. He stressed that policies should reflect socio-economic realities while safeguarding citizens’ rights, livelihoods, and overall well-being.
Highlighting Pakistan’s domestic green agenda, Dr. Malik introduced the upcoming Green Startups Initiative, a program aimed at empowering young entrepreneurs to launch eco-friendly ventures, connect with global investors, and generate sustainable employment. The initiative, aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision for sustainable development, will be promoted internationally through partnerships with governments and organisations abroad.
Ambassador Al-Khater praised Pakistan’s role in ensuring security during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, noting that Pakistan holds a “special place in the hearts of the Qatari people.” He expressed strong interest in broadening cooperation beyond climate action to include trade, investment, and economic development.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from Pakistan’s climate ministry and foreign office. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral ties in environmental sustainability, economic growth, and people-to-people exchanges, positioning the partnership as a model for regional cooperation on climate and green innovation.
