Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari announced the launch of Pakistan’s first competitive electricity trading market, calling it a major milestone in the country’s ongoing power sector reforms. The initiative, declared through the Competitive Market Operations Date (CMOD) by NEPRA, marks the transition from the traditional single-buyer model to a market-based, transparent electricity system.
The new framework is designed to ensure efficiency, accountability, and fair participation across the electricity value chain. Under a phased liberalization plan, 800 megawatts of electricity demand will be transferred to bilateral contracts executed via automated competitive auctions.
Minister Leghari credited the progress to the coordinated efforts of NEPRA, ISMO, CPPA-G, PPIB, the Ministry of Energy’s Power Division, and distribution companies (DISCOs). The government emphasized that this move is part of its long-term strategy to build a reliable, future-ready electricity market that strengthens governance, financial sustainability, and economic growth.
