Pakistan exports 10,000 buffalo embryos to China as the demand for buffalo milk in China increases.
In a further indication of significant advancements in China-Pakistan collaboration on buffalo embryo production and transfer, Pakistan recently exported 10,000 embryos to China.
Dr. Qaisar Shahzad, program manager at Royal Cell Biotechnology (Pakistan) Co. Ltd., which exported the embryos, told in a report that the shipment was valued at $2 million.
Based in Lahore and owned by China’s Royal Group, RCB (Pakistan) has formed a joint venture with Pakistan’s JW Group, focusing on the production and transfer of embryos from superior buffalo breeds using advanced IVF technology from China.
In August 2023, Pakistan granted RCB (Pakistan) the authority to export buffalo embryos, ova, and frozen semen to China.
The first shipment of 5,000 buffalo embryos was dispatched to China on June 8, 2024, followed by a recent second shipment of an additional 5,000 embryos, as stated by Dr. Qaisar Shahzad.
According to Dr. Qaisar, the embryos were produced from the oocytes of buffaloes at the Royal JW Buffalo Industry Co. Laboratory in Lahore. Over the next decade, China plans to import at least 300,000 buffalo embryos from Pakistan.
He mentioned that approximately 100 jobs have been created for locals in this process, and the joint venture has also produced another 10,000 buffalo embryos for sale within Pakistan.
Given the increasing demand for buffalo milk in China and the reputation of Pakistani buffaloes for their milk quality and production volume, China aims to further improve Pakistan’s superior buffalo breed through its advanced technology.
