Northwest University (NWU) and Karakoram International University (KIU) are set to conduct joint scientific expeditions in the Pamir-Hindu Kush-Karakoram region, with support from the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences (CPJRC). Under a newly signed cooperation agreement, both universities will collaborate on research, talent development, and faculty training, particularly in geological disaster prevention and cultural heritage conservation. They also explored ways to create more opportunities for Pakistani students to pursue academic degrees and postdoctoral studies at NWU.
KIU Vice Chancellor, Engr. Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah, highlighted the region’s complex geological conditions, frequent natural disasters, and rich cultural heritage, emphasizing the need for external collaboration in disaster prevention and heritage preservation. NWU President, Sun Qingwei, noted that NWU specializes in natural disaster prevention, ecological protection, and other related fields, which complement KIU’s strengths.
China-Pakistan cooperation in earth sciences continues to advance. In February, CPJRC and KIU signed a Document of Understanding (DoU) to jointly establish the Karakoram Observation and Research Station (KORS) on Natural Hazards, further strengthening their collaboration.
