New flight route from Guangzhou to Surabaya, Indonesia launched to enhance trade, tourism and cultural exchange.
A new direct flight route connecting Guangzhou, the capital of south China’s Guangdong Province, and Surabaya, the capital of Indonesia’s East Java Province, was officially launched on Friday.
The inaugural flight took off from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and landed at Juanda International Airport in Sidoarjo, a neighboring city of Surabaya, at 9:55 p.m. local time after a journey of five hours and 40 minutes. The route is operated by China Southern Airlines.
Upon arrival, the flight received a ceremonial water salute at Juanda International Airport, where Indonesian officials, Chinese diplomats, and airport representatives gathered to mark the occasion. Passengers were welcomed with cultural performances and gifted special souvenirs, highlighting the strong diplomatic and cultural ties between the two countries.
According to Wang Hongxiong, General Manager of China Southern Airlines Jakarta Branch, the Guangzhou-Surabaya route utilizes an Airbus A321 aircraft and operates four times a week. Flights from Guangzhou to Surabaya are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, while return flights from Surabaya to Guangzhou operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Wang emphasized that Guangzhou is the first city in mainland China to offer direct flights to Surabaya, leveraging Baiyun International Airport’s status as a key aviation hub. He added that the new route aims to facilitate convenient travel between the two cities while fostering deeper cooperation in trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.
