New center boosts tiger and leopard conservation in China through various methods involving new technologies.
The Northeast China Tiger and Leopard Culture International Communication Center was inaugurated on Monday in Jilin Province to emphasize wildlife conservation efforts.
A collaboration between the management bureau of the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park and Jishi Media, a Jilin-based media company, the center will utilize rare footage of tigers, leopards, and other wildlife captured by the park’s monitoring system. This content is being shared on global social media platforms to engage audiences and raise awareness of conservation initiatives, according to the center.
You Zhiqiang, general manager of Jishi Media, stated that the center aims to build a prominent “cultural brand” for Manchurian tigers and Amur leopards in northeast China through enhanced communication channels, international partnerships, and related efforts. Established in 2021, the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park spans Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces, providing a protected habitat for approximately 70 wild Manchurian tigers and 80 Amur leopards.
The park’s advanced monitoring system, largely developed by Jishi Media, includes nearly 28,000 infrared cameras, fire-prevention systems, and AI-driven analytics. Efforts are also underway to create new technologies for identifying individual Siberian tigers in the wild.
Manchurian tigers, also called Amur tigers, are native to Russia’s Far East and northeast China. They are among the world’s most endangered species and serve as a flagship species for the forest ecosystem.
