A Malaysian expert has emphasized that deepening cooperation between China, ASEAN, and GCC nations is essential to counter rising global protectionism and unilateralism, and to enhance global trade and investment.
Bunn Nagara, director and senior fellow at the Belt and Road Initiative Caucus for Asia-Pacific in Kuala Lumpur, noted that China, ASEAN, and GCC countries face similar developmental goals and challenges, making stronger collaboration across sectors both logical and beneficial.
Nagara identified energy, food security, and supply chain resilience as key areas for joint efforts. He explained that the GCC excels in oil and gas, China leads in renewable energy and electric vehicles, while ASEAN serves as a major market and manufacturing hub.
He stressed that greater resilience can be achieved by fostering closer partnerships and constructively addressing challenges as they arise. A flexible and open approach to cooperation is essential, while also being mindful of each partner’s needs.
Nagara pointed to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as a strategic platform to drive this trilateral collaboration, noting its broad scope covering sectors like the digital economy and green development.
He said the BRI aligns with the shared pursuit of sustainable development and provides a strong foundation for building synergies among China, ASEAN, and GCC countries.
In light of current global trade disruptions caused by protectionist policies, Nagara argued that ASEAN-GCC-China cooperation offers a promising model for the Global South to emulate.
Highlighting that these regions are part of the Global South and Asia, Nagara said their collaborative example could inspire similar initiatives in Africa and Latin America, where many countries face parallel challenges.
He clarified that the intent behind these partnerships is to safeguard developmental interests, not to pose threats. A non-confrontational approach ensures mutual benefit and stability.
Nagara concluded by stating that protecting global trade is vital for national development strategies, and this approach will also benefit other countries. He expressed hope for continued development through strengthened cooperation built on complementary strengths.
