Italian President Sergio Mattarella arrived in Beijing on Thursday, beginning a six-day state visit to China.
Upon his arrival, Mattarella visited the Summer Palace, China’s largest imperial park and a renowned classical garden known worldwide.
This visit coincides with significant milestones: the 20th anniversary of the China-Italy comprehensive strategic partnership and the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death, the Italian explorer who traveled to China along the Silk Road centuries ago.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning highlighted China’s readiness to deepen practical cooperation and cultural exchanges with Italy during a press briefing on Tuesday, in anticipation of Mattarella’s visit.
Mattarella’s previous state visit to China took place in February 2017.
