Heilongjiang Province Sets Record Grain Output, Strengthening China’s Food Security boosting both productivity and profitability.

China’s Heilongjiang province, often referred to as the country’s “grain barn,” has achieved a historic milestone by producing over 80 million metric tons of grain this year. This record-breaking output accounts for 11 percent of the country’s total, reaffirming the province’s role as China’s leading grain producer for the 15th consecutive year. Despite facing severe challenges such as natural disasters and the need to boost soybean production, Heilongjiang’s commitment to modern agricultural practices and black soil conservation played a critical role in securing this year’s bumper harvest.

Heilongjiang has also strengthened its position as China’s largest soybean-producing region. By increasing its soybean planting area to over 10 million hectares, the province expects its output to surpass 20 million tons for the third year in a row. Farmers have reported better profits, aided by innovative soybean varieties like Heinong 87, which have demonstrated superior yields. Efforts to reduce dependency on soybean imports have been supported by price adjustments that make domestic soybeans competitive with imported counterparts, ensuring economic benefits for local growers.

Modern agricultural management has been the cornerstone of Heilongjiang’s success. The provincial government has invested 300 million yuan annually in developing its seed industry. Heilongjiang Province Sets Record Grain Output additionally, 16 crop-breeding demonstration bases allow farmers to observe different crop varieties before planting. This proactive approach has encouraged farmers like Liu He, who experienced exceptional yields with new soybean varieties, boosting both productivity and profitability.

Disaster preparedness and risk management have been crucial in safeguarding the province’s agricultural sector. When adverse weather conditions struck, prompt government interventions minimized losses. Emergency seed distribution and effective flood control measures helped protect thousands of hectares of farmland. The province’s advanced reservoir system prevented massive water damage, securing food production even during severe floods.

Agricultural insurance has also provided a safety net for farmers. With over 11.4 million hectares of grain covered this year, farmers like Han Zhimin received timely compensation for crop losses, easing concerns about planting risks. This comprehensive support system, combining technological advancements, financial security, and disaster response, underscores Heilongjiang’s enduring contribution to China’s food security, with a goal to boost grain production to 90 million tons by 2026.
