Gwadar Expressway Phase-II sent to ECNEC for approval marking a crucial step in the development of the region.
Pakistan’s Central Development Working Party (CDWP), under the leadership of Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal, has forwarded the “Construction of Eastbay Expressway Phase-II in Gwadar” to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for final approval. This is a significant project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
With a proposed cost of Rs30.13 billion, the project is expected to be funded through 95% Chinese Grant-in-Aid. Once approved, it is set to boost Gwadar’s importance as a hub for regional trade and connectivity.
The second phase of the expressway is planned as a 13.8-kilometer, six-lane (four paved lanes) dual carriageway. It will directly link the New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) with the existing Eastbay Expressway, enabling smooth, high-speed cargo transport to Gwadar Port. The plan also includes supporting infrastructure like a toll plaza, drainage, lighting, fencing, and security towers.
This road project is seen as vital to enhancing Gwadar’s role in logistics and improving port operations. It has been repeatedly emphasized in meetings of the Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) and Joint Working Group (JWG) under CPEC, with strong support from the Chinese side.
Alongside this, CDWP approved six other development projects worth Rs9.21 billion and sent four large infrastructure proposals, collectively valued at Rs451 billion, to ECNEC. These include key initiatives aimed at improving road access and expanding electricity supply in remote regions.
