Guo Jiakun, recently appointed as the spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held his first press briefing on Monday in Beijing.
Born in August 1980 and belonging to the Mongolian ethnic group, Guo is a member of the Communist Party of China.
The foreign ministry established its spokesperson system in 1983, making it the first government department in China to do so. Over the past 42 years, the system has become increasingly systematic, standardized, and efficient. Notably, it remains the only government department in China to hold daily press conferences on every working day.
To date, 35 spokespersons have been appointed to explain the principles, policies, and concepts of China’s diplomacy. Their work has centered on safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and dignity while enhancing domestic and international understanding of China’s foreign policy and promoting friendly cooperation with other nations.
The development of the spokesperson system has paralleled China’s reform and opening-up, reflecting the country’s growing integration with the world and the increasing need for mutual understanding in international relations.
