Government Advocates Green CPEC Initiatives given the adverse impacts of climate change in recent times.
President Pakistan-China Joint Chambers of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) Moazzam Ghurki stated on Thursday that a “green” future is essential for humanity, given the severe impacts of climate change. At a think tank session at PCJCCI, he advocated transforming the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into a model for green development under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Ghurki emphasized that this transformation should include intensified plantation, natural forestation support, honey production, and green tourism to protect the environment while advancing green technologies and energy production in CPEC projects.
Senior Vice President PCJCCI Fang Yulong highlighted China’s role as a leader in green technologies and renewable investments. He noted that China has the expertise and resources to help Pakistan balance industrialization with environmental protection. Fang mentioned Pakistan’s ambitious “Clean Green Pakistan” initiative, which aims to increase protected areas from 13% to over 15% by 2023 and create 5,000 green jobs.
Further, the Vice President PCJCCI Hamza Khalid detailed the green initiatives led by the Federal Ministry of Climate Change, such as the Ten Billion Tree Tsunami Programme, Clean Green Pakistan, Protected Areas Initiative, Plastic-Free Pakistan, and Recharge Pakistan Initiative. He also suggested that the private sector could contribute positively to these efforts through innovation, modern technology, and financial resources within CPEC’s ongoing industrial and agricultural developments.
Additionally, the Secretary General PCJCCI Salahuddin Hanif explained that the reconstituted CPEC Business Council is crucial for encouraging private sector participation in key CPEC projects. The government supports the private sector in accelerating large-scale industrial units and establishing manufacturing and IT zones under CPEC.
