The first power generation unit of the Zhangzhou nuclear power project in Fujian province, East China, began commercial operations on Wednesday, as confirmed by the China National Nuclear Corporation.
This development marks significant progress in the large-scale construction of the Hualong One, a domestically designed third-generation reactor, helping China to diversify its energy mix and achieve its carbon reduction goals.
The Hualong One reactor adheres to the highest global safety standards and is a key achievement in China’s advancement of innovative nuclear power technologies.
The Zhangzhou nuclear power project is planned to include six Hualong One nuclear units.
Each Hualong One unit produces over 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, meeting the electricity needs of 1 million people in moderately developed nations. This also contributes to a reduction of 3.12 million tonnes of standard coal consumption and a decrease of 8.16 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
