First commercial shipment of BYD EVs arrive at Karachi Trust Port, marking a significant step towards green transition in transportation in Pakistan.

The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has successfully managed the first-ever commercial shipment of electric vehicles from Chinese automaker BYD, marking a milestone in Pakistan’s automotive industry. The shipment was processed at the Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT), a privately operated facility within KPT. The arrival of BYD’s electric vehicles is expected to play a key role in modernizing the local auto sector by encouraging the adoption of environmentally friendly transportation solutions.

In August 2024, BYD, a global leader in electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy solutions, officially entered the Pakistani market, ushering in a new phase of sustainable mobility for local consumers. At a launch event held on August 17, 2024, at Lahore’s Expo Centre, Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, hailed BYD’s market entry as a major step towards Pakistan’s transition to greener transport. As the world’s fifth most populous country, Pakistan has seen increasing competition between Chinese automakers like Great Wall Motor, Saic Motor, and Chongqing Changan Automobile and long-established Japanese brands such as Toyota and Honda. However, EV sales remain a small fraction of overall auto sales in the country.

In October 2024, Mega Motor Company (Private) Limited, a subsidiary of The Hub Power Company Limited (HUBCO), partnered with BYD Auto Industry Company Limited – one of the world’s top manufacturers of new energy vehicles (NEVs). Under this collaboration, the two companies will produce, market, distribute, and sell BYD-branded passenger vehicles in Pakistan while also entering technical licensing agreements for related products.

Founded in 1994, BYD has established itself as a global pioneer in electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, renowned for its innovations in sustainable transportation. The successful clearance of BYD’s first shipment at KPT sets the foundation for continued EV imports, supporting Pakistan’s transition towards a cleaner and more technologically advanced automotive future.
