The Fengning pumped storage hydropower plant, the world’s largest of its kind, has officially started full operations in Chengde, located in Hebei Province, northern China.
Managed by the State Grid Corporation of China, the plant has an installed capacity of 3.6 million kilowatts and is capable of generating 6.61 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year.
Since the operation of its initial units in 2021, the plant has produced around 8.62 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.
Pumped storage is considered a leading renewable energy storage technology and plays a vital role in supporting China’s transition to green energy.
The Fengning plant is expected to save 480,800 tonnes of standard coal and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 1.2 million tonnes annually, making a notable contribution to the nation’s energy efficiency and environmental sustainability targets.
