Chinese official calls for advancing legacy of 1995 UN Conference on Women as China is set to host another summit for Women this year.
The upcoming Global Summit of Women, scheduled to be held in Beijing later this year, is a key event aimed at carrying forward the legacy of the 1995 World Conference on Women, according to a Chinese official.
Huang Xiaowei, deputy head of the National Working Committee on Children and Women under the State Council, made these remarks on Monday during the ongoing 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
China, in collaboration with UN Women, will co-host the Global Summit of Women to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1995 conference. Speaking at CSW69, Huang emphasized that the summit is not only a tribute to past achievements but also a step toward innovation and future commitments. She highlighted its role in fostering global unity, upholding the principles of the 1995 conference, and accelerating the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action to promote shared development worldwide.
As the host country of the 1995 conference, China has consistently upheld its commitment to integrating women’s development with broader economic and social progress. Huang pointed out the significant progress Chinese women have made over the years and elaborated on the country’s policy framework, which focuses on institutional support, increased investment, and empowerment initiatives.
Over the past three decades, China has made substantial progress in areas such as poverty reduction, healthcare, and education, significantly enhancing women’s well-being and contributing to gender equality.
During the UN discussions, representatives from various countries expressed optimism that the Global Summit of Women would foster consensus, drive concrete action, and revitalize global efforts for women’s advancement. They also encouraged China to continue its leadership role amid growing challenges to gender equality worldwide.
Beyond participating in multilateral discussions, including a general debate, ministerial roundtables, and side events, Huang also met with UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous and senior officials from multiple countries.
CSW69, the UN’s largest annual gathering focused on gender equality and women’s empowerment, is set to conclude on March 21.
