Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Friday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Wang, also a senior member of the Communist Party of China’s Political Bureau, remarked that while China-Canada relations have seen fluctuations in recent years, the absence of territorial disputes or major geopolitical conflicts presents an opportunity for both nations to become mutually beneficial partners.
Marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 20th anniversary of their strategic partnership, Wang emphasized the importance of using this milestone to review past progress and envision a future of strengthened ties.
He called for the two countries to implement the consensus reached by their leaders, encouraging a more balanced and rational approach to bilateral relations. Wang also urged Canada to adopt a positive and open attitude and to create a business-friendly environment for Chinese enterprises.
Wang criticized the United States for misusing tariffs and disrupting the global trade order, contrasting it with China’s support for multilateralism and free trade. He noted that China provides zero tariffs to the least developed countries and promotes global modernization through shared development.
Amid international uncertainties, Wang advocated for adherence to the UN Charter, equality among nations, non-interference in internal affairs, and peaceful coexistence as fundamental principles of international relations.
In response, Anita Anand expressed Canada’s appreciation for its ties with China and affirmed her country’s willingness to maintain dialogue. She emphasized a constructive and practical approach to restoring cooperation in areas such as trade, public health, and cultural exchange.
