Chinese FM calls for advancing dialogue among civilizations as he underlined President Xi Jinping’s vision of Global Civilization Initiative.
China has proposed enhancing dialogue among civilizations by upholding fairness, encouraging exchanges, and driving progress, according to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Wang while speaking video at an event marking the first International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, emphasized the importance of this new UN-designated day in meeting global aspirations for deeper intercultural understanding and shared development.
He noted that in an era marked by unprecedented global changes and challenges, the value of civilizations has become increasingly relevant, and the UN initiative gained unanimous support from member states.
Wang highlighted President Xi Jinping’s Global Civilization Initiative, which emphasizes shared human values, the preservation and innovation of civilizations, and international cooperation through cultural and interpersonal exchange — all of which reflect China’s commitment to global dialogue.
Wang outlined China’s three-point proposal for fostering civilizational dialogue: ensuring equal respect among civilizations, promoting meaningful exchanges, and driving civilizational advancement.
He urged respect for each country’s development path and governance model, rejected the narrative of civilizational conflict, and called for an end to unilateralism and interference in others’ affairs.
To deepen global engagement, Wang advocated drawing lessons from intercultural dialogue to solve global problems and expand the routes toward modernity, noting China’s intent to host the 2028 UNAOC Global Forum.
Lastly, Wang stressed supporting civilizational progress through the exchange of knowledge, people, and technology, particularly by leveraging innovations like AI to preserve and evolve cultural legacies.
The UN General Assembly, in its 78th session in 2024, adopted a resolution initiated by China and 82 other countries to establish June 10 as the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.
