Chinese Film shines at CIFF 2024, the story of film revolving around a Chinese middle class family.
The Chinese film Brief History of a Family won the Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema Award for Best Asian Feature Film at the 45th Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF), which concluded on Friday evening.
Director Lin Jianjie expressed his excitement, saying, “This is my first feature film… It was the only full-length Chinese language film in the competition, making this recognition very special.” He emphasized his goal of bringing Chinese cinema to an international audience, calling the achievement a significant milestone.
The film revolves around a Chinese middle-class family and their son’s enigmatic friend, focusing on familial relationships. The jury praised the film for its subtle emotional exploration and strong artistic vision. Lin noted that the jury remarked on the film’s maturity, stating it doesn’t feel like a debut work.
Brief History of a Family was scheduled for a screening at a Cairo Opera House theater, the main venue of the CIFF. The festival also hosted Chinese Cinema Week, showcasing seven Chinese films, including Decoded by Chen Sicheng, who received the Golden Pyramid honorary award.
Egyptian filmmaker Khaled El-Hagar, a jury member of the International Critics’ Week Competition, highlighted the importance of exposing Arab audiences to films from diverse cultures like China and India. He described Brief History of a Family as intriguing and praised China’s longstanding influence in cinema.
During the ten-day event, CIFF signed a memorandum of understanding with the Beijing International Film Festival to enhance bilateral cooperation. Egyptian Minister of Culture Ahmed Fouad Hanno remarked on the deep-rooted cultural ties between Egypt and China, stating that their cinematic and artistic traditions reflect their rich civilizations and share similarities in storytelling styles.
In the International Competition, Romania’s The New Year That Never Came, directed by Bogdan Muresanu, won the top Golden Pyramid Award, while Russia’s Postmarks and Brazil’s Malu received the Silver and Bronze Pyramid Awards, respectively.
Established in 1976, CIFF is one of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the Arab world, Africa, and the Middle East. This year’s edition featured around 190 films from over 70 countries and regions.
