A Chinese envoy on Monday called for all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from making inflammatory remarks or taking provocative actions to prevent further escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized the urgency of maintaining peace in the region, speaking at the UN General Assembly meeting on implementing the outcomes of major UN conferences and reforming the UN system.
Referring to the Palestinian issue as “the biggest wound to human conscience,” Fu highlighted the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which continues to cause civilian casualties, the spreading of violence to Lebanon, and the looming threat of a full-scale war in the Middle East.
He urged respect for the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of all nations, condemning any violations of international norms and attacks on civilians. Fu stressed that justice must prevail over might, and the Palestinian people’s long-standing desire for an independent state should no longer be ignored.
Fu called for an immediate comprehensive ceasefire, noting that a two-state solution is the only sustainable resolution to the conflict.
Regarding the Ukraine crisis, Fu acknowledged the difficulty of finding a resolution and urged all parties to prioritize peace and dialogue while avoiding battlefield expansion and further provocations.
He also mentioned the joint launch of the Friends for Peace group by China, Brazil, and other Global South countries, aimed at supporting the UN Charter’s principles and building consensus for political solutions.
Fu concluded by stressing the need for reasonable reform of the UN Security Council, emphasizing that it should represent the voices of developing nations, including African countries, and avoid becoming a platform for geopolitical confrontation.
