China expressed its hope for Syria to achieve peace and restore stability soon and reiterated its readiness to play a constructive role in this process, as stated by Chinese envoy Geng Shuang on Tuesday.
Speaking at the UN Security Council briefing on Syria, Geng, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, noted recent significant changes in Syria’s situation, which have drawn China’s close attention.
Geng emphasized the importance of stabilizing the security situation, urging all parties in Syria to remain calm, exercise restraint, avoid escalating tensions, and prevent further conflicts.
He called on all parties to safeguard civilians, protect diplomatic missions, and ensure the safety of foreign nationals in the country.
Geng expressed hope that Syria’s state institutions would remain functional to help restore social order, urging influential nations, especially regional powers, to play a positive role in stabilizing the situation.
The ambassador raised concerns over Israel’s continued airstrikes in Syria, its actions in the demilitarized buffer zone in the Golan Heights, and plans to expand settlements, calling on Israel to cease such activities.
Geng reaffirmed China’s policy of non-interference in Syria’s internal affairs and its commitment to friendship and cooperation, respecting the Syrian people’s choices.
Stressing the need for a political solution, Geng said China supports Security Council Resolution 2254 and Syria’s political process, advocating for inclusive dialogue and a national reconstruction plan based on Syrian-led efforts.
The ambassador emphasized respecting the will of the Syrian people to avoid division and domestic fragmentation, and he praised the UN and Special Envoy Geir Pedersen’s mediation efforts to facilitate dialogue.
Highlighting the fight against terrorism, Geng called for Syria’s firm stance against extremist forces, ensuring that Syrian territory is not used to support terrorism or threaten other countries.
Acknowledging Syria’s worsening humanitarian crisis, Geng urged all parties to allow unhindered humanitarian access, support UN relief operations, and lift unilateral sanctions imposed on Syria immediately.
