Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has urged Israel to immediately put a stop to military operations in Gaza and observe its duties under international humanitarian law.
Fu communicated his dissatisfaction regarding the humanitarian catastrophe spreading in the Gaza Strip during the UN Security Council’s open debate on the Middle East on Wednesday, according to the health authorities in the enclave, where violence has taken almost 59,000 lives and left more than 143,000 injured.
Fu stated, “The situation in Gaza is unprecedented,” highlighting the calamitous humanitarian state. Citing the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, he emphasized that the intensity of hunger has never been worse, with aid organizations reporting growing starvation and worsening conditions for both aid workers and civilians.
Fu called for fully restoring the flow of humanitarian aid and promoting relief operations by the UN and other international agencies. He laid emphasis on China’s stance that such measures are obligatory under international humanitarian law.
Fu stressed the need for an immediate stop to all military operations in the territory, expressing disapproval of Israel’s latest ground offensive in central Gaza, which included strikes on World Health Organization facilities.
The representative to the UN also highlighted concerns over the increase in violence and instability in the West Bank. He urged Israel to halt attacks, stop settler violence, and conduct fair inquiries to ensure accountability. Fu reiterated that Jewish settlement activities are in breach of international law and UN Security Council resolutions and must end immediately.
“The Palestinian issue remains at the core of the Middle East conflict,” Fu stated, emphasizing that the two-state solution is the only workable remedy to bring peace between Israel and Palestine. The Chinese Envoy cautioned against unilateral moves that could destabilize the structure, including any attempts to annex Gaza or the West Bank.
China is looking forward to the upcoming high-level meeting on the application of the two-state solution, voicing optimism that it would provide an impetus to the stalled peace process.
