On Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh, who is in Beijing to attend the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
During their meeting, the two leaders announced that they would elevate their bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
President Xi expressed his appreciation for President Guelleh’s consistent participation in every FOCAC summit since the forum’s inception.
Xi highlighted that this year marks the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Djibouti, noting that the two nations have fostered sincere relations, engaged in mutually beneficial economic collaborations, and promoted cultural exchanges, serving as a model for South-South cooperation.
China is prepared to collaborate with Djibouti to build on their shared experiences, deepen their win-win cooperation, and strengthen their consensus on peaceful coexistence to further advance their bilateral ties.
Xi emphasized China’s willingness to support Djibouti in operating key projects such as the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway and the international free trade zone, developing a regional trade and logistics hub, and jointly running Africa’s first Luban Workshop to help Djibouti train high-quality talent for its economic growth.
President Guelleh expressed gratitude to China for its significant support in Djibouti’s economic development and improving the lives of its people. He committed to working with China to advance critical projects like the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway and to further deepen cooperation across various sectors.
Guelleh also vowed to enhance communication and collaboration with China to jointly contribute to promoting regional security and development.
