Chinese Defense Minister addresses ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus emphasizing on peaceful resolutions to conflicts.
Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun participated in the 11th ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus on Thursday, where he delivered a keynote speech.
Highlighting the overall stability in the Asia-Pacific region, Dong cautioned against the potential risks of becoming entangled in geopolitical conflicts. He urged collective efforts to preserve and protect the region’s harmony and prosperity.
Dong expressed China’s willingness to collaborate with all parties to strengthen ASEAN’s central role in regional affairs and enhance the existing cooperation framework for mutual benefit.
Calling for unity among regional countries, Dong emphasized resolving conflicts through dialogue rather than resorting to disputes, force, or the formation of exclusive alliances, especially with external involvement.
He proposed deepening defense and security cooperation, implementing the Global Security Initiative, and building a more integrated security community to address shared challenges in the region.
Dong also stressed the importance of expanding shared maritime interests between China and ASEAN. He advocated for flexible and diversified approaches to maritime security cooperation to enhance joint capabilities for safeguarding regional stability and contributing to global peace.
ASEAN comprises 10 member nations: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
