The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced on Thursday that it will award its highest distinction, the International Meteorological Organization (IMO) Prize, to Xu Jianmin this year. Xu is recognized as a pioneer in the development of China’s meteorological satellite system and a key contributor to satellite data applications and services.
Xu Jianmin is expected to formally receive the award during the WMO Executive Council meeting scheduled for 2026.
The IMO Prize honors outstanding contributions in the fields of meteorology and hydrology, as well as efforts that promote international collaboration in these disciplines.
A member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering since 1997, Xu was a leading architect behind the FengYun (FY) Meteorological Satellite Ground System. He played a vital role in overcoming major technical challenges related to FY satellite navigation, enhancing the development of satellite-based meteorological products, and facilitating the global adoption of FY data for weather observation, forecasting, and services, according to the WMO.
