China’s operational underwater data center near Lingshui, Hainan, has expanded its capabilities to handle AI tasks and cloud services while being naturally cooled by surrounding seawater. The facility, sealed in steel capsules, saves energy and reduces land use.
First deployed in 2022 and commercialized in 2023, the center now includes upgraded modules for more demanding operations. Another underwater facility is under construction near Shanghai.
While the setup is energy-efficient and eco-friendly, experts highlight environmental concerns, including slight warming of local waters and potential effects on marine biodiversity. Some studies suggest the structures may even act as artificial reefs, attracting marine life.
