Fu Cong, China’s UN envoy condemns assassination of Hamas leader considering it as a blatant attempt to sabotage negotiation efforts.
China has expressed strong opposition and condemnation of the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, which occurred on Wednesday in Tehran. According to Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, the assassination represents a direct attempt to undermine peace efforts and violates the UN Charter’s principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
During a UN Security Council briefing on the Middle East situation, Fu Cong conveyed China’s deep concern about the potential escalation of regional instability resulting from this incident. He highlighted that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli strike while visiting Iran, with Hamas and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirming the death.
Fu Cong criticized the lack of responsibility claimed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government regarding the assassination and emphasized the ongoing Gaza conflict’s severe impact, including nearly 40,000 deaths and a significant humanitarian crisis.
He pointed out that despite the adoption of Resolution 2735 by the UN Council over two months ago, ceasefire negotiations have made no progress. The conflict’s spillover effects, such as rising tensions between Lebanon and Israel, Syria and Israel, and in the Red Sea, are a growing concern for the international community.
Fu Cong urged all parties to adhere to international ceasefire calls and fully implement Council resolutions. He condemned provocative actions and military means, stressing that such measures would only worsen the crisis.
As China’s UN envoy condemns assassination of Hamas leader, he also emphasized on joint efforts to achieve an immediate ceasefire. Cong urged Israel to halt military operations in Gaza and end its collective punishment of its people. Fu Cong also called on influential countries to intensify efforts to resolve the conflict.
