China’s total electricity usage reached a record 10.4 trillion kilowatt-hours in 2025, a 5% increase from the previous year, the National Energy Administration (NEA) announced on Saturday. This marks the first time any country has crossed the 10-trillion-kWh threshold.
The NEA noted that China’s energy consumption now more than doubles that of the United States and surpasses the combined electricity use of the EU, Russia, India, and Japan. Officials attributed the growth to industrial expansion, urbanization, and increased demand for residential and commercial electricity.
Experts say this milestone underscores China’s rising role in global energy markets and highlights the need for sustainable energy solutions. The NEA emphasized ongoing efforts to balance power generation with green energy initiatives, aiming to maintain long-term energy security while reducing environmental impact.
