China’s first cruise ship completes 84 trips in 2024 gaining immense popularity among travelers throughout the year.
China’s first domestically constructed large cruise ship, Adora Magic City, has completed 84 voyages and recorded 600,000 inbound and outbound visits during its first year of commercial operation, as reported by Shanghai Customs.
Since its maiden voyage on January 1, the ship has gained significant popularity among travelers, capturing 40 percent of China’s international cruise market in 2024.
On Sunday, over 3,000 passengers boarded the cruise at Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal for a six-day New Year trip.
The ship, measuring 323.6 meters in length, boasts a gross tonnage of 135,500 tonnes and has the capacity to accommodate 5,246 passengers across 2,125 guest rooms, supported by around 1,300 crew members.
Known as “the golden industry that floats,” the cruise sector has a long industrial chain and a high level of international integration. The construction of Adora Magic City involved over 1,000 domestic and international manufacturers.
A second large cruise ship built in China is set for delivery by the end of 2026 and will commence international voyages from Guangzhou in 2027.
Moreover, China’s cruise economy is experiencing steady growth, driven by visa-free policies for international tourists and the global recovery of the cruise market. Analysts emphasize the sector’s role in boosting domestic demand, unlocking consumption potential, and fostering new economic growth drivers.
To further support the industry, China has introduced targeted policies. In May, visa-free entry for foreign tourist groups on cruise ships was permitted at any Chinese cruise port. Additionally, new regulations in June streamlined the resupply process for international cruises docking at Chinese ports.
