China’s CR450 bullet train set to break speed records as the prototype is set to go under field testing in Hubei province this year.

China’s CR450 bullet train prototype is scheduled for field testing in Hubei province this year, as announced by the China State Railway Group. The trials will be conducted on a section of the high-speed railway connecting Shanghai, Chongqing, and Chengdu, which is expected to become operational in the latter half of the year.

China introduced two CR450 prototypes at the end of last year, designed to achieve test speeds of 450 km/h and operational speeds of 400 km/h. Once in service, these trains will surpass the current CR400 model, which operates at 350 km/h, making them the fastest high-speed trains in the world.

The China Academy of Railway Sciences, responsible for developing the CR450, has successfully reduced the train’s weight by 10%, improving fuel efficiency. Additionally, the development team has partially enclosed the running gear—including wheels, axles, and suspension systems—to minimize rolling resistance, representing a major advancement in railway engineering.

Sui Fusheng, a researcher at the Institute of Acoustics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, highlighted the challenge of reducing weight while maintaining noise control. Since higher speeds increase noise levels, the team had to develop solutions that ensured a comfortable ride experience comparable to the CR400 operating at 350 km/h.

To address this, the team introduced integrated composite materials that offer thermal insulation and soundproofing. These materials not only reduce production costs and complexity but also enhance passenger comfort by effectively managing noise and temperature.

According to Li Yongheng, an official from China State Railway Group, China has evolved from a follower to a global leader in high-speed rail technology, setting new international standards. To maintain this position, the company has collaborated with ministries, research institutes, universities, and enterprises to address key technological challenges and support China’s modernization efforts.
