China’s CPPCC National Committee convenes annual session, emphasizes good beginning and high-quality development

China’s top political advisory body, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, is set to convene its annual session from March 4 to 10 in Beijing, as announced by a spokesperson. The session, marking the second gathering of the 14th National Committee of the CPPCC, will span six days, starting from 3 pm on Monday and concluding on the morning of March 10.

Spokesperson Liu Jieyi affirmed that all necessary preparations for the session have been completed, with various activities organized. Notably, foreign diplomatic envoys to China will attend the opening and closing meetings.

Reflecting on the CPPCC National Committee’s work in 2023, Liu highlighted its successful commencement, emphasizing that the CPPCC operates under the overall leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Throughout the year, political advisors focused on providing recommendations for Chinese modernization, conducting 94 consultation activities and 138 research and inspection activities.

As a crucial platform for socialist consultative democracy, the CPPCC ensures the integration of people’s voices and will into its political consultation, democratic oversight, and participation in state affairs.

This year holds special significance as it marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the establishment of the CPPCC. Liu reiterated the CPPCC’s commitment to enhancing its abilities in political consultation, democratic oversight, and participation in state affairs.

Economic issues have been a key focus for national political advisors, particularly regarding high-quality development. Efforts have been made to support the private sector’s role in modernization and address challenges faced by private enterprises. Additionally, proposals have been made to promote high-quality employment and deepen the integration of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Looking ahead, the CPPCC National Committee will continue to provide advice on major policies, strategic needs, and development issues concerning Chinese modernization. Liu expressed confidence in China’s economy, citing its resilience, potential, and vitality, and emphasized the CPPCC’s role in promoting international exchanges and contributing to building a community with a shared future for humanity.
