The 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities of China commenced on Friday evening in Sanya, a coastal city in Hainan Province.
Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, officially announced the opening of the Games.
Nearly 7,000 athletes from 35 delegations across the country are participating in the nine-day event, featuring 18 competitive sports and three demonstration sports. The Games are set to conclude on November 30.
Equestrian events for the Games were held earlier in July in Zhaosu, located in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
As delegations entered the stadium, brief performances showcased the unique cultural and ethnic characteristics of their regions. These displays preceded an opening ceremony celebrating the diversity of China’s 56 ethnic groups.
The National Traditional Games first took place in 1953, with around 400 athletes from 13 ethnic groups competing in Tianjin. The second edition followed 29 years later in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Moreover, this year, the coconut tree climbing race was introduced as a new event. Rooted in the traditional labor of local ethnic communities on the tropical island, this activity combines fun and competitiveness, making its debut in the Games.
Additionally, the tournament serves as a platform to promote harmony and cultural integration among China’s 56 ethnic groups. By highlighting traditional sports, it provides an opportunity for athletes to compete, share cultures, and celebrate their rich heritage and skills.
