China wins Asian Water Polo Championship in thrilling shootout in a close contested finale against Japan.
The Chinese women’s water polo team secured a thrilling victory against Japan in the Asian Water Polo Championship held in Zhaoqing, Guangdong, on Sunday. The closely contested final went into a penalty shootout, where China edged out Japan with an 18-17 win to claim the championship title.
Before the final, China had dominated their previous four matches with ease. However, Japan proved to be a tough opponent, putting up a strong fight. In the first quarter, Japan capitalized on numerical advantages to take an early 4-1 lead. Despite missing several promising opportunities, China fought back but struggled to gain a decisive lead throughout the game.
Both teams in the championship fielded young players. In the penalty shootout, China’s captain and goalkeeper, Shen Yi, made three crucial saves, ultimately securing China’s triumph over Japan.
Reflecting on her performance, Shen Yi shared that the final penalty shot was not particularly challenging for her. “I know my opponent well. We’ve faced each other since the 2018 Asian Games, and she is an experienced player on their team. I trusted my instincts, relying on past experiences and match preparations. I didn’t overthink it, and that made it easier for me,” she said.
