China welcomes negotiated peace in Ukraine including U.S.-Russia talks, as stated by Fu Cong during a UNSC briefing on Ukraine.
China welcomes all efforts aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine, including the recent agreement between the United States and Russia to begin peace talks, stated Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, on Monday.
Speaking at the UN Security Council briefing on Ukraine, Fu reiterated China’s commitment to resolving global conflicts through dialogue and consultation, in accordance with the UN Charter.
He recalled the Minsk Agreements signed a decade ago, which were endorsed by the UN Security Council and seen as a viable path toward conflict resolution. However, he expressed regret that they were never fully implemented, leading to an escalation of the crisis and the large-scale conflict that persists today.
Fu described the failure of the Minsk Agreements as unfortunate and emphasized the need for deep reflection on its historical lessons.
Since the onset of the crisis, China has consistently advocated for a political solution through dialogue and consultation, Fu stated. He highlighted China’s four-point proposal, which calls for respecting all countries’ sovereignty and territorial integrity, upholding the UN Charter, addressing legitimate security concerns of all nations, and supporting all efforts toward a peaceful resolution.
China has actively engaged in diplomatic mediation, maintaining communication with key stakeholders, including Russia and Ukraine, and participating in UN-led discussions on the Ukraine crisis. Fu stressed that China continues to play a constructive role in promoting a ceasefire and a political settlement.
Additionally, China has collaborated with Brazil and other nations to establish the Group of Friends for Peace, aiming to unite Global South countries in support of a peaceful resolution. Fu stated that the evolving situation has validated China’s approach as objective, fair, rational, and pragmatic, reflecting a broad international consensus.
He noted that the Ukraine conflict is approaching a critical juncture for negotiations and asserted that lasting resolutions to conflicts are always achieved at the negotiation table, with history ultimately delivering a just outcome.
Fu expressed hope that all stakeholders in the Ukraine crisis would engage in peace talks and work toward a fair, lasting, and binding peace agreement acceptable to all sides.
As the conflict is taking place on European soil, Fu emphasized that Europe must take responsibility for promoting peace. He urged all parties to address the root causes of the crisis through negotiation and to establish a balanced, effective, and sustainable security framework for long-term regional stability.
