Chinese envoy on Wednesday urged for an immediate and lasting cease-fire in Gaza and called for concrete steps to ease the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, told the Security Council that since May 16, Israel has escalated its military campaign in Gaza, resulting in the complete devastation of populated areas and the deaths of over 1,000 Palestinians within just two weeks.
Fu raised pressing questions, asking when the violence will end, whether there are any limits to the methods being used, and if Palestinians are once again destined to lose their homes.
In response, Fu firmly stated that an immediate cease-fire is essential and cannot be postponed. He urged Israel to halt all military activities without delay.
He emphasized that addressing the humanitarian disaster must be a top priority, calling on Israel to lift its blockade, restore full access for humanitarian aid, and support the work of the UN and other aid agencies.
Fu stressed that Gaza and the West Bank are integral parts of the State of Palestine. He called on the international community to resist any attempts to annex these territories or forcibly displace Gazan residents.
He also noted that the United States, given its influence, must act justly and responsibly by taking strong steps. Fu added that the UN Security Council holds the main responsibility for maintaining global peace and security and should act accordingly to bring about a lasting cease-fire and ease the humanitarian situation.
Fu reiterated that the two-state solution remains the only realistic path to resolving the Palestinian issue. He expressed hope that the upcoming high-level conference in June will renew momentum for implementing this solution.
He concluded by saying that China will keep working with the international community to help end the violence in Gaza, improve humanitarian conditions, and achieve a just, lasting resolution to the Palestinian question, ultimately bringing peace and stability to the Middle East.
