China unveiled a major report on global engineering frontiers at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Zhongguancun (ZGC) Forum Annual Conference in Beijing on Wednesday.
Li Xiaohong, president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), presented the “Engineering Fronts 2025” report, which identifies 94 engineering research frontiers and 95 development frontiers across nine fields. The report highlights four key trends shaping the engineering landscape: integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with engineering, acceleration of real-world applications and commercialization, expansion into extreme and complex domains, and the adoption of green and low-carbon solutions across systems and industries.
Since 2017, the CAE has released the annual report to guide academic research, industrial development, and policymaking. This year marked the first presentation of the report at the ZGC Forum, a leading international platform for technological and industrial innovation. The 2026 ZGC Forum runs through Sunday under the theme “Full Integration Between Technological and Industrial Innovation,” reinforcing China’s focus on promoting science and technology development and international collaboration.
