China is set to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit this autumn in the northern city of Tianjin, Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced on Friday.
He made this statement during a press conference held alongside the third session of the 14th National People’s Congress.
Wang stated that leaders attending the Tianjin summit will review the SCO’s achievements, outline future plans, and strengthen cooperation through mutual consensus.
“This summit will mark a new chapter for the SCO, reinforcing its role as a close-knit community with a shared future,” he emphasized.
Highlighting that 2024 is designated as the SCO’s “China Year,” Wang noted that China, as the organization’s rotating president, has scheduled over 100 events across political, security, economic, and cultural sectors under the theme “Upholding the Shanghai Spirit: SCO on the Move.”
Wang underscored the significance of the SCO’s origins, stating, “The SCO was founded in China and named after Shanghai, which holds special meaning for us. We are delighted to welcome it back.” He reaffirmed China’s commitment to advancing the Shanghai Spirit and fostering the organization’s continued growth.
