China plans to establish 10,000 5G-powered factories and at least 20 pilot cities for 5G + industrial internet integration by 2027, according to a strategy unveiled by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Monday.
The initiative aims to accelerate the fusion of data-driven information and communication technologies to develop a new industrial network system centered on 5G.
By 2027, the goal is for 5G + industrial internet technologies to be widely adopted across critical sectors of the real economy, focusing on five key areas: network infrastructure, technological advancements, integrated applications, industrial ecosystems, and public services.
Tang Libo of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology highlighted that emerging technologies such as 5G-A, AI, advanced industrial control systems, and enhanced computing power will be essential in meeting future industrial needs and creating a robust industrial network.
This approach is expected to improve synergy between the industrial internet and key supply chains, fostering a high-quality development ecosystem, Tang added.
Currently, China hosts over 17,000 5G + industrial internet projects across all 41 major industrial sectors, including 4,000 operational 5G factories. Of these, 700 high-level 5G factories are recognized by MIIT, showcasing advancements in industries such as manufacturing, mining, energy, and logistics.
