China expressed gratitude to numerous foreign nations and international organizations for their condolence messages following a devastating earthquake in Xizang Autonomous Region, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun announced on Wednesday.
The 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Dingri County in Xizang on Tuesday morning, resulting in 126 fatalities and 188 injuries so far, with rescue operations still underway.
“Since the earthquake, many countries and international organizations have conveyed their condolences to China through various channels,” Guo stated during a regular press briefing.
As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, China has received condolence messages from the leaders of 22 nations, including Russia, Pakistan, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Maldives, Japan, Cuba, Venezuela, Serbia, Belarus, Spain, Italy, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Oman, Grenada, El Salvador, and Uzbekistan.
Additionally, foreign ministries of countries like India, Brazil, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Türkiye, Bahrain, and Iran, alongside notable figures such as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Shanghai Cooperation Organization Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev, and Central American Parliament President Carlos Hernandez, have also extended their sympathies.
“We deeply appreciate these messages,” Guo added.
