China has reiterated its support for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in playing a constructive role in facilitating a political and diplomatic resolution to the Iran nuclear issue, according to a statement by Chinese envoy Li Song on Thursday.
Li Song, China’s permanent representative to the IAEA, made the remarks after a joint meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, Russian envoy Mikhail Ulyanov, and Iranian envoy Reza Najafi.
During the meeting, China, Russia, and Iran underscored that mutual respect and diplomatic engagement remain the only effective way to resolve the nuclear issue. They also affirmed the IAEA’s capacity and expertise to make a meaningful contribution to diplomatic efforts aimed at positively addressing the matter.
Both China and Russia voiced support for Iran’s efforts to enhance its cooperation and dialogue with the IAEA, Li noted.
He further emphasized that China acknowledges Iran’s pledge not to pursue nuclear weapons, respects its right to peaceful nuclear energy, and backs its efforts to engage in constructive dialogue, including with the United States, to defend its lawful interests through negotiation.
Li concluded by expressing China’s willingness to deepen collaboration and dialogue with Russia, Iran, and the IAEA, aiming to contribute positively to diplomatic initiatives for resolving the Iran nuclear issue.
This meeting occurred ahead of the upcoming third round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States on Tehran’s nuclear program and the lifting of U.S. sanctions, set to be held in Muscat, Oman, on Saturday
