Tariffs should never be used as a means to pressure or intimidate other nations or to meddle in their internal matters, stated a spokesperson from China’s foreign ministry on Friday.
Mao Ning, the ministry’s spokesperson, made this statement during a routine press briefing in response to the United States’ decision to introduce tariffs of up to 50 percent on Brazilian imports starting August 1. The U.S. also accused Brazil of engaging in “unfair” trade practices and called for an end to alleged domestic political “persecution.”
Mao emphasized that respect for sovereign equality and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries are fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and core norms of international relations.
