China sets record with 8,600 vehicle car carrier as the ship’s hull assembly and adjustment was completed in almost 200 days, marking a new breakthrough for China.
A newly built Chinese car carrier, capable of transporting up to 8,600 vehicles, was officially delivered on Thursday, marking a national milestone for the fastest hull assembly and adjustment cycle for such large-scale vessels, according to China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
Developed entirely in China, the vessel is approximately 200 meters long with a beam of 38 meters. It operates on dual fuel—fuel oil and liquefied natural gas—and features 14 decks designed for parking passenger cars, trucks, and buses, enabling efficient loading and transportation of vehicles.
The ship’s hull assembly and adjustment were completed in just 200 days, setting a record in China for the fastest construction of a car carrier.
“By utilizing integrated construction technology and an advanced roll-on/roll-off system, we overcame efficiency challenges and set a new benchmark. The vessel boasts outstanding performance, high energy efficiency, and adaptability for various vehicle types. Looking ahead, we have secured orders for additional car carriers, including a 9,000-vehicle model and a 10,800-vehicle model, which will be the largest in its class,” said Li Zhizhong, production director at CSSC’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding.
CSSC plans to deliver a total of 28 vessels this year. So far, the company has delivered seven ships, maintaining an average of one vessel every 11 working days, Li added.
