A rescue team from Yunnan province in Southwest China reached Yangon, Myanmar, early Saturday following a powerful earthquake that struck the Southeast Asian nation on Friday.
The 7.7-magnitude earthquake caused widespread devastation, resulting in at least 144 fatalities and injuring 732 people across Myanmar.
In response to the crisis, Myanmar’s State Administration Council Chairman, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, has appealed for international assistance, as reported by local media.
Early Saturday at 6:30 am, a rescue and medical team consisting of 37 members departed from Changshui International Airport in Kunming, Yunnan province, heading to the earthquake-affected region in Myanmar.
The team carried extensive emergency search and rescue equipment, including advanced life detectors, earthquake early warning systems, portable satellite communication devices, and drones, along with essential relief supplies, according to Xinhua News Agency.
A powerful earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, with its epicenter recorded at 21.85 degrees north latitude and 95.95 degrees east longitude.
The China Earthquake Networks Center reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 30 kilometers and measured 7.9 in magnitude.
