China-Russia Gas Pipeline reaches full capacity marking an important milestone in bilateral energy cooperation.
The China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline, which holds the record for the largest single-line gas transmission capacity in China, has now been fully connected, according to an announcement from the pipeline’s operator on Monday.
The pipeline has also started operating at full capacity, delivering an annual transmission volume of 38 billion cubic meters, as reported by the China Oil & Gas Pipeline Network Corporation (PipeChina).
As a key project in China-Russia energy cooperation, the cross-border gas pipeline spans 3,000 km in Russia and 5,111 km in China.
The Chinese section of the pipeline starts in Heihe, a northeastern city on the Russian border, and transports natural gas from Siberia to Shanghai, China’s financial and economic center.
The full connection of the pipeline significantly boosts natural gas supply capacity and provides better emergency peak-shaving capabilities for the densely populated eastern regions of China. It also completes the country’s eastern energy strategic corridor, according to PipeChina.
Since the northern part of the China section began operations in December 2019, the pipeline has delivered over 80 billion cubic meters of natural gas, benefiting around 450 million people along its route.
The China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline is the third long-distance cross-border pipeline to supply gas to China, following the China-Central Asia and China-Myanmar oil and gas pipelines.
