Beijing Defends South China Sea Sovereignty
China’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) criticised the intrusion of more than 10 Philippine vessels near Huangyan Dao on September 16. Spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang said Manila’s actions violated China’s sovereignty and stability in the South China Sea. He called the Philippines a “troublemaker” and stressed that the China Coast Guard acted lawfully and professionally. Moreover, Zhang warned that Beijing will respond firmly to any further provocations.
China Reaffirms Nuclear Policy Amid Parade Debate
During the briefing, Zhang addressed concerns about China’s nuclear deterrence. He stressed that China reaffirms its nuclear policy, denies nuclear carrier reports, and maintains a consistent self-defence strategy. Beijing follows a strict no-first-use stance and promises not to target non-nuclear states. Furthermore, Zhang emphasised that China keeps its arsenal at the minimum level required for security. He added that China avoids any arms race and seeks to ensure peace through strategic stability.
Aircraft Carrier Fujian and Regional Balance
Analysts claim that the Fujian aircraft carrier could shift the balance of power in the Western Pacific. In contrast, Zhang stated that China’s defence development is defensive in nature. He rejected the idea that the carrier threatens U.S. deployments in the first island chain. Instead, he underlined that Fujian strengthens China’s sovereignty protection and regional stability.
China Denies Nuclear Carrier Reports
Finally, Zhang commented on speculation about a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier under construction in Dalian. He clarified that he had no details on such a project. Once again, he stressed that China reaffirms its nuclear policy, denies nuclear carrier reports, and develops carriers only according to its security needs and technological progress. Therefore, he advised against unnecessary speculation.
