China pushes key ecological initiatives at Two Sessions to significantly boost environmental conservation efforts.

Ecological protection remains a key focus at the Two Sessions, with members of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and deputies to the National People’s Congress (NPC) presenting numerous proposals to enhance China’s environmental conservation efforts.

During the third session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee, which concluded on Monday, 604 proposals were submitted on ecological civilization, making up 12.1 percent of all proposals received.

Jiang Qi, a CPPCC member and researcher at the Ningxia Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, stressed the need to improve farmland shelterbelt networks in the Yellow River’s square bend region. He emphasized that scientific planning, alignment with agricultural modernization, and the use of advanced technologies and management strategies would help establish a more resilient and diverse shelterbelt system.

In 2024, major ecological projects were launched in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, including initiatives focused on conservation, soil erosion control, water resource protection, and ecological restoration along the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains. To date, nearly 230,000 hectares of land have been rehabilitated in the region.

Yang Qinglong, an NPC deputy and mayor of Guyuan City in Ningxia, underscored the importance of reinforcing the Three-North Shelterbelt Program. He suggested extending national afforestation and sand control policies to the region and incorporating Guyuan into the national reserve forest development plan, measures that would enhance forest stability in the Liupan Mountains and strengthen regional ecological security.

The need for intensified desertification control in the Qaidam Basin was also highlighted, with calls for scientifically tailored methods, acceleration of key ecological projects, and the development of diverse financing models to attract investment in sand control initiatives.

Additionally, integrating solar energy projects with desertification control was proposed as a sustainable solution to support green development.

Qiao Yaqun, an NPC deputy and governor of Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province, emphasized that combining ecological restoration with clean energy expansion would contribute to long-term environmental sustainability.
