Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced new initiatives on artificial intelligence, trade, and investment to strengthen cooperation within the expanded BRICS bloc.
Speaking at the BRICS leaders’ summit in New Delhi, Xi called for stronger political, security, economic, and financial cooperation among member states.
Xi Calls for Stronger Economic Integration
According to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency, Xi said the success of the “Greater BRICS Initiative” depends on stronger practical cooperation.
He urged members to improve coordination and protect industrial and supply chains. In addition, he called for efforts to build a more integrated BRICS market.
China Proposes BRICS AI Open-Source Zone
Xi announced that China will lead the creation of a BRICS AI Open-Source Zone.
The initiative will support cooperation on large language models, AI training, and open artificial intelligence systems. Moreover, it aims to promote broader access to AI technologies among member states.
China also proposed a partnership focused on BRICS special economic zones. Furthermore, Beijing will host a BRICS Service Trade Forum next year to promote trade and investment.
BRICS Expands Its Global Reach
BRICS originally included Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The bloc has expanded in recent years with the addition of Iran, Indonesia, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Meanwhile, 10 other countries have received partner status. This expansion gives BRICS a broader presence across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.
China and Russia have referred to the expanded grouping as “Greater BRICS.”
Middle East Conflict Adds Diplomatic Pressure
The summit took place amid renewed violence in the Gulf. The tensions include attacks involving the United States and Iran.
At the same time, Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia have added to regional instability.
Despite the escalating conflict, BRICS leaders adopted a joint declaration on Saturday. Iran and the UAE also supported the declaration.
The statement expressed serious concern over the worsening situation in the Middle East. It also called on all sides to exercise maximum restraint.
BRICS Seeks Greater Practical Cooperation
Overall, China’s proposals place AI, trade, investment, and supply-chain cooperation at the center of the expanded BRICS agenda.
As the bloc grows, Beijing is seeking stronger practical coordination among its members. These initiatives could also increase cooperation in emerging technologies and international trade.
